Top Five Questions I Get Asked as a Trichologist

As a board-certified trichologist with a practice in New York City for over a decade, I have been asked countless questions from my clients about their hair and scalp health. And I love it! Asking questions is essential to understanding hair and scalp concerns better. The more we ask, the more we know, the more we can support our hair and scalp. That’s why I’m sharing the top five questions I most frequently encounter at my center—so we can keep learning together.

First, it’s important to acknowledge the uniqueness of each individual’s hair and scalp microbiome. There is no universal remedy for hair and scalp ailments, particularly concerning hair loss. That’s why seeking guidance from a trichologist is essential. We specialize in the intricate interplay of factors contributing to hair and scalp health based on the individual.

In my practice, I prioritize empowering my clients with knowledge and insights that will help them understand their hair and scalp, as well as the options available to them. Whether it's navigating hair loss, scalp concerns, or simply seeking to improve the health and appearance of their hair, my goal is to be a support system on that journey without generalizing their condition. We focus on personalized care tailored specifically to them and their hair type.

Through these inquiries, I hope you get simplified answers that jumpstart your journey and a glimpse into the meticulous approach I take as a trichologist to address hair and scalp concerns.

Question #1. Why am I losing so much hair?

This is a loaded question because hair loss is a complex issue with various contributing factors. In my practice, I prioritize understanding each client’s unique situation. Together, we explore potential causes of hair loss, whether it be genetic predispositions, hormonal imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, environment, or external stressors. Through personalized consultations and a comprehensive analysis, I develop tailored treatment programs that can be easily integrated into your daily routine. Some cases may necessitate referrals to specialists for further scalp analysis or medication, but many treatments can be conveniently administered at home.

Question #2: Will I grow new hair?

Honesty is paramount in my practice and I offer my hair loss diagnoses based on the facts. I assure my clients that hair growth is a gradual process. Just as hair loss occurs over time, regrowth requires patience and commitment. I work closely with each individual to devise a realistic and sustainable treatment plan that puts homeopathic solutions at the forefront. Whether it involves nourishing scalp treatments, nutritional supplementations, or collaboration with leading hair loss experts or dermatologists, we work together toward revitalizing your hair. In cases where regrowth is not feasible, we explore alternative solutions such as custom hair pieces to restore confidence and help you feel like you again.

Question #3  Why is my scalp so oily and itchy?

Oftentimes, addressing scalp concerns can yield remarkably simple solutions. You could just be using the wrong product or not washing your hair enough. That’s why I emphasize the importance of proper hair care practices, from selecting suitable shampoos to mastering scalp massage techniques and how to blow dry your hair. Educating my clients on effective cleansing routines and recommending appropriate products can alleviate oiliness and itchiness symptoms rather simply. However, in cases of persistent issues stemming from overactive sebaceous glands, we delve deeper to uncover the underlying causes of your scalp symptoms and implement targeted interventions based on your hair type.

Question #4 Why is my hair so dry?

Dryness can stem from a multitude of factors, including excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, and incompatible hair products. All of these things can leave your hair feeling brittle, dry, and sometimes even breaking off. Through collaborative consultations, we discuss and identify potential culprits, like product ingredients that can often strip your hair of its moisture. Then, we’ll create a personalized solution to replenish that moisture and restore vitality to your hair. From gentle shampoos to hydrating creams and nutritional support, we’ll formulate comprehensive strategies to address hair and scalp symptoms like dryness and promote hair health from within.

Question #5. I am so stressed. Is that why my hair is falling out?

Stress indeed exerts a significant influence on hair health, often exacerbating conditions such as hair loss. Stress increases the hormone cortisol which can disrupt the hair growth cycle. Elevated cortisol can prematurely push the hair  into the telogen phase, which is the hair’s falling out phase, and results in increased shedding leaving the hair feeling thinner. When stress levels are regulated, the hair shedding will stop. Keep in mind that stress is not the only reason your hair might be falling out, that’s why a scalp analysis from an expert is so important.

By acknowledging the interconnectedness of mental health and physical well-being, I empower my clients to adopt holistic approaches to stress management. Through lifestyle modifications, dietary adjustments, and targeted interventions, we strive to mitigate the impact of stress on hair shedding and promote overall wellness.
